Making Your Home Office Work for You
For many of us, working from home is enticing. There aren't many other jobs that allow us to roll out of bed "whenever" or work wearing our "business casual" of foot pajamas. We can work while watching TV, sitting on our computer office furniture, or lounging on the couch. Working from home has its advantages. But, it also demands one thing: a home office. The key to a good home office is one that is conducive to productivity. This can mean getting new computer office furniture, or it can mean begging your kids to leave you alone for eight hours a day. To get your home office up to speed, consider adding the following: Comfortable Computer Office Furniture: Even before we knew about carpal tunnel syndrome, comfortable office furniture was important. If you aren't comfortable sitting down, you won't be very likely to stay seated and stay focused. If you computer office furniture is falling apart, or about as comfortable as a bed of nails, try buying something new. High Speed Internet: Just like comfortable computer office furniture, high speed Internet also adds a level of comfort by freeing you of a lengthy wait.
Dial up is no longer conducive to helping you be successful. In short, it takes too long. Do yourself a favor and invest in high speed internet. You'll be able to work much faster. Take Away Distractions: Working from home may sound like a dream job, where else can you recline in your computer office furniture and watch the latest episode of your favorite soap. While this may sound great, if you are serious about getting things done, removing distractions is the first step. Do away with your television, ignore your DVD, and no matter how much it begs you, don't turn on your video game console. Work now, play later. Get Organized: In order to be successful working from home, you need to be organized and in order to do that, you need the right computer office furniture. Rather than just having a table and throwing everything in a giant pile, invest in a filing cabinet or a desk with a lot of drawers. The more places you have to put things, the better your chances of not losing any important documents.
When all Else Fails, Remove the Sound: No matter how fast your internet, or how comfortable your computer office furniture, working from home won't work for you if you can't distance yourself from your home life. If you are working in one room, and your kids are running around and yelling in the next, it will probably be hard to get things done. One thing you can try is asking (i.e., bribing) your kids to be quiet or sound proofing your office. Leave the Mess Behind: Once you've gotten all your computer office furniture, and set everything up, you will probably begin decorating your office with "office like" things. A picture here and a calendar there are fine, but try not to go overboard. Filling your office with things that go inside your house - such as skis, movies, or magazines - will leave it cluttered and could potentially leave you distracted: watching your favorite DVD is always more fun than writing a proposal.
